Astigmatic Keratotomy (AK) and Limbal Relaxing Incisions

Astigmatic Keratotomy and Limbal Relaxing Incisions use small incisions to treat astigmatism. In astigmatic keratotomy, or AK, small arc-like incisions are made to cause the cornea to assume a more normal, rounded shape. AK is often combined with cataract or refractive lens surgery to obtain a better final visual result.

The procedures are fast and pain free, and are done in our refractive suite. Post-operative care involves using antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops for about 5 days after the procedure. A refractive evaluation would need to be done to determine whether you are a good candidate for these incisional procedures.

CK – Conductive Keratoplasty

CK is an innovative way to treat patients who suffer from minor farsightedness, or presbyopia, the need for reading glasses to see up close after age 40. Persons in their early 40’s or beyond can attest to the frustration of reaching for reading glasses every time they want to read the paper, see the computer, or even look at their watch. People who never had to rely on glasses before find that they now cannot see anything up close without them. CK is an alternative to reduce the dependency on reading glasses.  Anyone who is over 40 and struggling with reading glasses, or is mildly farsighted can possibly be a candidate for this procedure.  CK is also used to treat certain kinds of astigmatism.

CK is a non-laser treatment that uses radio waves to reshape the cornea. The treatment uses an extremely small probe that delivers the radio wave pulses. Your surgeon will determine the precise number of pulses necessary to give you the desired outcome. The procedure is fast and pain- free, and is performed in our laser suite.

The first step for someone looking to be rid of complete dependency on reading glasses is to schedule a no-charge evaluation with one of our surgeons. You can make this appointment by calling 800-9LASER6. At the examination, your surgeon will determine if CK is the appropriate procedure for you.
